FAIRLIE
AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Mackenzie County Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held on Monday. There was an attendance of 40 members, and the chair was occupied by the president (Mr George Morris). Mr C. J. Talbot forwarded an apology for unavoidable absence. The president read the report which stated that the weather experienced on Show Day was not good, and the gate takings showed a considerable falling off. However, the attendance, in spite of the weather, testified to the increasing popularity of the Show. The entries w r ere a record, and the quality of the exhibits was well spoken of by the judges. During the year the Committee carried out some much needed permanent improvements to the show grounds. The cattle pens, which had reached their term of usefulness, were pulled down, and new and lasting pens were erected in a more central position. Improved housing for riding displays for the Robert Leitch Cup was made. ; and the expediture was more than justified by the increased interest of j exhibitors and public in the displays, i The innovation of a trip to the Hermitage for judges who could be in : Fairlie over the week-end was a great success, and was availed of by some . 30 judges and exhibitors. The object ! of the trip was to induce judges to be : in Fairlie at the earliest, so that judging could be commenced promptly ,;n show day. The committee offered thanks to the judges, class stewards, and other helpers.
Mr T. F. Bussell, treasurer, explained the balance sheet. This showed that the year closed with a credit balance of £176/11/10. New permanent j work had been carried out to the value of £172, and the Society was to be congratulated on possessing up-to-date cattle yards. Show day was, unfortunately. wet, and the gate receipts I showed a falling off of £54, as com- i pared with last year. Mr J. Bray said that the Society ! should be pleased with the result of the year’s work. The permanent work done was a good asset. The report and balance sheet was unanimously adopted. The retiring president thanked the committee and other helpers, including class stewards and judges, for the way they had assisted him. He es-i pecially thanked exhibitors for the way they came forward with entries. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Morris for the good work he had done for the Society. Mr Cook proposed and Mr J. Bray seconded that Mr Morris should be again elected to the position of president. Mr Morris declined nomination. He thanked the meeting but thought the office should be a moving one. On the motion of Mr Morris, seconded by Mr A. Mackenzie, Mr W. H. Cook was unanimously elected president. Mr Cook returned thanks for the honour done him. He would do his best to forward the interests of the Society’. It was decided on the motion of Mr J. Bray, seconded by Mr J. Sinclair, that Rule 7 which provides that the Management Committee shall consist of 30 members, including the president and vice-presidents, be altered to read “That the Management Committee consist of not les sthan 30 or more than 50 members including the president, vice-presidents and treasurer.” The following officers were elected for the year:—Patrons, Messrs J.
