NEW APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED. British Official Wireless RUGBY, July 9. The secretary for the Colonies (Lord Passfield) has appointed Mr G. J. Tomlinson, formerly of the Nigerian Civil Service, to be Assistant Under-Secre-tary of State in the Colonial Office. He will take charge of the new division which is being set up to deal with all matters relating to the personnel of the Colonial Services. (Mr Tomlinson is a retired Colonial Civil servant, and is lecturer in Hausa, School of Oriental Studies, London University, and in Tropical African Services courses at Oxford and Cambridge. He was born in 1876. He is a Master of Arts and a barrister-at-law. He was attached to the Transvaal Education Department, 1903-4: Nigerian Administrative Service, 1907-27; seconded to the Gold Coast as Director of Education, 1910; Acting-Secretary for Native Affairs, Nigeria, 1925-27; men ■ of Committee on Colonial Appointments, 1929).
