FLOOD DAMAGE.

GRANT OF £SOO TO LEVELS COUNTY. The Rev. C. Carr, M.P., for Timaru, has received the following letter from the Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Public Works, in reference to applications made for grants towards the cost of restoring damage caused by floods last year:— “Referring to our interview of the Ist August last, when you handed to me a letter dated 31st July from the County Clerk Levels County Council, concerning flood damage which occurred during a serious flood in -July, and also to your letters of the 20th August and 10th September with regard to the encroachment of the Opihi River at O’Mara’s Ford t I have to advise that an inspection was made by my Department’s District Engineer at Christchurch, in company with the County Engineer, and it was found that a considerable amount of damage had been done.

“The estimated cost of restoration is as set out hereunder:— £ Wiseley’s and Little’s Bridges at Cave 50 Rockwood Bridge 150 Encroachment of Opihi River above water race headworks 500 Opihi River encroachment at Waipopo 400 Damage to county roads 1354 Protective works at Hanging Rock Bridge 271 £2,725 “This estimate, however, has to be reduced by the last mentioned item of £2*7l for the restoration of protective works at Hanging Rock Bridge. These works are, I understand, situated on the the boundary of the Levels and Geraldine Counties, and the damage which occurred* was the subject of a request made to me by the Geraldine County Council. lam informed that this body is prepared to undertake the necessary work at this bridge, and for that reason I have approved authorisation of a Governlnent contribution to the Council. The deletion of this item reduces the total to £2,454, which, as you will note, includes an amount of £4OO for O’Mara’s Ford, which was the subject of your letters of the 20th August and 10th September last. “With regard to Government assistance towards the cost of restoring this damage, I have given the matter very careful consideration, and I have pleasure in informing you that I have decided to approve a contribution of £SOO. Authority for this amount is now being issued direct to the Levels County Council.”
