NO WORK
DUNEDIN’S UNEMPLOYED “BATTALIONS.” By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, February 5. No solvent has yet been found for the unemployment difficulty in Dunedin. Battalions of enforcedly-idle men apply in vain at the Trades Hall, and more would register there if they thought there was any hope of work. This week, Mr R. Harrison (secretary Of the General Labourers’ Union), and Mr J. Robinson (secretary of the District Council of the Alliance of* Labour) conferred with the Hon. W. B. Taverher, and the Minister promised to do his best to see if work could be found. One job that has raised expectations is the building of the Poolburn dam, where preliminary operations have begun, but no call has yet been made for a labouring gang. A housing scheme in North East Valley is looked to, but it is understood that some ftiattfers therewith have had to be referred to Wellington, and Mr J. W. MUhro, M.P., is interesting himself in trying to get this put through without delay.
