NOTES PROM RICCAR’fON. (Special to the “Herald.”) CHRISTCHURCH, February 4. The weather was fine for training operations at Riccarton this morning. Horses with-engagements at the Dunedin meeting provided all the interest. Jaleux, Pride and Swiftway opened by running about five furlongs along the back, at a sound pace. Praise, Greenaway and Ozone were associated in a five-furlong sprint down the straight course. Ozone was in front till a little over a hundred yards from home, when Praise and Greenaway drew away, finishing together just in front of Ozone. Dunraven and Coroner sprinted half a mile in 48 3-ssec, the former having a slight advantage. It was a smart effort. Winsome Hind finished in front of Full Feather after doing half a mile in 49sec. Don Jose galloped seven.furlongs on the plough in lmin 32sec, beating Pixie Gold, who joined in for the last six. This was a good gallop. Paquito broke away at the mile post and after going two furlongs was picked up by Gay Crest. The pace was sound in the early stages. Paquito going to the mile post in 50 2-ssec, and he was hitting out very strongly when the winning post was reached in lmin 42 2-ssec. Paquito’s effort was very pleasing. Topere went in good style while reeling off seven furlongs on the plough in lmin 32sec. Silver Coot sprinted half a mile up and back in 49 4-ssec. Blue Peter was in front of Marsham at the end of seven furlongs, which occupied 1 min 33sec. Straightcourse was given a halfmile spin -by himself, going comfortably. Meprisant and Netley covered six furlongs in 1 min 17 4-ssec, keeping together all the way. Waterline and Disorder broke away at the mile and a quarter mark and went a little better than half-pace - for six furlongs, after which they ran home a bit faster. Ball Dress beat Semper Paratus over half a mile in 51sec. Leader and The Viscount were to-

gether at the end of five furlongs, in lmin 4sec.

Amor and Count Cavour were companions over a mile in lmin 44sec. They kept together nearly all the way, but Count Cavour showed great dash over the last bit, and had an advantage of half a length when the post was reached. Audience sprinted half a mile on the plough in 50 2-ssec. Phastar and Tariff covered six furlongs in lmin 16 2-ssec. Tariff had a slight advantage at the finish. It was a useful gallop, as they carried big weights. Hoylake had Quarterdeck as a mate in a mile gallop. They ran together to the half-mile post in 51 3-ssec. Quarterdeck held her place till about two furlongs from home, when Hoylake gradually drew away, finishing about three lengths clear, in lmin 45sec. Hoylake was running on very strongly, and could have done better. Ranelagh and Sea Raid were companions in a half-mile sprint up the back, run in 51sec. Pangolin (I. Tilson) jumped two hurdles. He shaped moderately at the first, but flew the second in good style. Later he cleared the same two obstacles again attractively. Troilus galloped seven furlongs, taking 1 min 21sec for the last six. Nightmarch reeled off five furlongs in lmin 2sec, doing the last half-mile in 49sec. He went with great dash and finished strongly. LOANS FOR HOUSES. STATE ADVANCES POLICY. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 4. A statement yesterday that owing to the number of empty houses in Auckland, no further Government loans for building houses here would be made until the situation improved, was published in consequence of the following letter received by Auckland solicitors (for two clients), from the State Advances Deputy Superintendent:— “With reference to the applications submitted on behalf of the abovenamed clients for loans to erect dwellings, I have to inform you that the matter was again placed before members of the Board of this office, who have resolved to postpone the consideration of applications for the present. J would like to explain that the housing position in Auckland is not at present considered satisfactory, inasmuch as there are a good many empty houses to be found about the city. In the circumstances members of the Board don’t consider it advisable or expedient to grant any further loans for the building of more dwelling houses just now in Auckland. As soon as the situation /improves, and it is found that there are no unoccupied buildings in the city, and that further dwelling houses are required, your clients may then renew their applications when the matter will receive further consideration. **

WELLINGTON NOT AFFECTED. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON. February 4. The Superintendent of the State Advances Office, when approached, said conditions in Wellington did not justify similar action to that taken in Auckland, where it was estimated that 1400 houses were vacant. The decision affected Auckland. The announcement that no more loans would be made in Christchurch was 'incorrect. There had been a misunderstanding.

NO STOPPAGE OF GRANTS IN DUNEDIN.

By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN. February 4. The statement that the State Advances Department has stopped for the time being granting loans for building homes in Auckland, owing to the number of empty houses there, is not likely to foreshadow a similar cessation in Dunedin. A leading agency firm reports that there are very few empty houses here. Even old-fashioned ones, if in good repair, are in demand. Further, it is understood that in Dunedin there has been of late no undue delay in granting loans applied for.
