PRISONER LEAPS TO DEATH.
FEARED CAT O’ NINE TAILS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received February 4, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, February 3. Fear of the cat o’ nine tails led James Spiers, 39 years old, who was sentenced on Friday to ten years’ penal servitude and fifteen strokes of the cat for a brutal attempt to rob a city cashier to leap over the bannisters and fall headlong twenty-five feet to the stone floor of Wandsworth Prison. He died a few minutes after being sent to hospital. Spiers was being led to the triangle when he broke away in the presence of officials and visiting justices. The "Daily Express” uses the incident as an argument for the abolition of this form of punishment.
