DOWNWARD TREND.
INCREASED EXPORT OF BUTTER .VALUES BECOME L©WER. The production of butterfat so far for the 1929-30 season continues on a level 4.6 per cent, above that for the 1928-29 season; there is also a tendency to favour butter as against cheese (says the Monthly Abstract of Statistics).
Measured by the figures relating to the quantity graded for export, the output of butter in November showed a seasonal gain of 23.5 per cent, over October, and was 12.2 per cent, ahead of November, 1928. The cumulative figure for the three months ended Novem ber shows an increase of 9.7 per cent, over 1928.
The output of cheese showed the customary seasonal gain over October, but the level of production as indicated by the three-monthly cumulative figures is 8.2 per cent, lower than that for 192829.
The increased production should be interpreted in terms of definitely lower values in the overseas markets, as recessions were recorded in the butter and cheese prices in November as compared with November, 1923, buttei dropping (according to the average of four weekly quotations )from 178 s to 173 s 6d, and cheese from 107 s to 94s 9d. The outstanding feature at this juncture of the present season is this slight downward trend in the prices for both commodities.
