Mr A. L. Lamb returned to Timaru yesterday from a trip to America. Mr Stewart Keenan, Knox College, Dunedin, is expected to arrive in Timaru to-day. News has been received by the United States Consul at Auckland of the death in Indiana on August 16, of Alfred A. Winslow, aged 75, United States Consul-General for New Zealand from 1915 to 1920. A cable message from London reports that Mr John Beard, president of the General Workers’ Union, was elected chairman of the General Council of the Trade Union Congress to-day. The death occurred at Auckland yesterday of Mr Nisbet Mcßobie, aged 56, a former Southland Rugby representative for nine years, and a member of the All Black team which toured New Zealand in 1896. Deceased was a well-known bowler and golfer. He served in various New Zealand newspapers, and at one time was general manager of the New Zealand “Times,” Wellington.
