VICTORIAN CARNIVAL CONCLUDED. GOTHIC WINS FISHER STAKES. (United Pross Association —By Eioctrio Tclc-crnph—Copyright.) (Received Nov. 11, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 11. The "weather was fine and bright for the final day of the Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting, and the attendance was large. The going was good. Ramulus was always prominent and won the Batman Stakes easilj'. He was ridden and trained by New Zealanders, M. McCarten and G. Price, respectively. Meadow King finished best in the Flemington Handicap, and won narrowly. He cost 150 guineas as a yearling, and this was his first success. Hhe previously was third in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes. Vaals had a big lead at six furlongs in the Fisher Plate, but Gothic, which had been third in the earlier stages, led into the straight and won brilliantly. He has scored three wins in as many starts at the

meeting, and has won £17,700 in stakes. He is trained by a former New Zealander, Lou Robertson. Though last in the opening stages, Bacchus finished fast in the V.R.C. Handicap, and won brilliantly. He is a stablemate of Statesman, the Cup winner, and gave McCarten his second win for the, afternoon. Oral Treaty had command over the last twelve furlongs of the steeplechase, -and though he tired, lust lasted the distance out. Noscitur, after occupying fourth place at the commnecernent of the Final Handicap, led at the distance, and beat the fast-finish-ing Reputed King. Toohey rode the winner. The last half was covered in 49Jsec. . McCarten was repiimanded for crossing the field too sharply with Ramulus at the start of the Batman Stakes. THE RUNNING REVIEWED. (Special to the “Herald.”) CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 10. A change to cooler and damper conditions on Saturday morning came at a rather inopportune time, the first rain of the week falling just as people were preparing to leave for Riccarton. The Stead Gold Cup, the chief attraction on the card, gave Laughing Prince an opportunity to record liis second w.f.a. win at the meeting. The race was run to suit speed, but the Wanganui four-year-old won so easily that the result would probably have been the same however the race had been run, as Rapier was below Iris best. CONSISTENT CARINTHIA. Diana’s Lad and Carinthia had most admirers for the Port Cooper Hurdles. Ned Kelly and Nine of Spades led to the second hurdle (opposite the birdcage), but Nine of Spades over-reached and soon dropped to the rear. Mime joined Ned Kelly at the nine furlongs, the pair going on from Carinthia and Ned Kelly. Mime dropped out at the far turn, and at the top the leaders were Troilus, Carinthia and Bonatic. Carinthia was just in front of Troilus at the last obstacle, and stalling off a vigorous challenge by Troilus, Carinthia claimed the verdict by a length. Bonatic was five or six lengths away, two lengths ahead of Diana’s Lad. Ned Kelly almost fell at the last hurdle, but he was beaten at the time. Carinthia has raced consistently and often over hurdles this season, but this was his first win since he cleared out from a big field at the National meeting.

HISTORIC WINS IMPRESSIVELY. In the Cressy Handicap, backers expressed marked preference for Historic, the brother to Tarleton carrying about, double the amount entrusted to Gay Sonnet, who was a little better backed than Money Mine. Pangolin, Money Mine, Gay Sonnet, and Gold Brick were the early leaders, but at the end of three furlongs Buoyant, who was last away, rushed to the front and showed the way round the curve to Pangolin. Gay Sonnet, Money Mine and Gold Brick. At the home turn Rascal joined the leading bunch, and two furlongs frofh home tile leaders were Buoyant, Rascal and Pangolin. Then Historic, who was third last at the home turn, came with a great, dash on the outside, and cutting down the pacemakers in short order, the favourite won by a length and a half from Taboo, who put in a late run and beat Rascal for second money by half a length,' Pangolin was another length

aAvay, with Money Mine fifth. Historic had finished second tAvice earlier in the Aveek, just failing to see out the journey. NEDDA AGAIN. Dutch Money 3117, Nedda 2142, Francolin IS6O, and First Money 14 40 Avere the only ones seriously considered by backers in the Pioneer Handicap, and they were the ones to claim the attention of the judge. Francolin, First Money, Push and Nedda Avere the smartest beginners, and when the course proper Avas reached First Money and Francolin, near the rails, Avere Avell clear of Nedda, and the pair looked like returning the dividends. Then Nedda and Dutch Money (avlio had been slow off the mark), put in their claim and gathered the leaders rapidly. A fine finish resulted in Nedda Avinning by a neck from Dutch Money, First Money and Francolin being only necks away. Jaleux Avas fourth and Stealth fifth. Dutch Money missed the jump out, and was not in the picture over the first half of the trip, otherwise she would have reversed positions Avith Nedda. The first four to finish Avere all by Paper Money, who Avas responsible for all the placegetters in the IrAvcll Handicap on Monday, and first and second in the Spring Nursery on Wednesday. RED HECKLE SURPRISES. Eight of the nine chances in the Members’ Handicap were supported to the extent of four figures, the most popular candidates being Cimabue 3241, Childsplay 2250, Benzora 1897 and Royal Saxon 1601. Royal Saxon, Cimabue, Set Sail and Childsplay Avere first to moA r e, but at the end of two furlongs Banket had taken charge from Royal Saxon, Red Heckle and Childsplay. The Greenwood pair (Golden Armour and Haze), were last at this stage. Banket ' led into the Straight from Red Heckle, ArroAV Lad, Cimabue and Benzora. Benzora made a dash at the top of the straight and appeared to take the lead from Red Heckle, but the tliree-year-old came again,

and after a great battle, defeated Benzora by a head. Set Sail Avas tAvo lengths aAvay, a length in front of Haze, who' put in a fine run from the home turn. Red Heckle, Avho is OAvned on the West Coast, won a tAVo-year-old handicap at Riccarton last season, and just went under to the Derby winner Nightmarch in a hack race on Cup Day. He has had comparatively little racing experience, and looks like reaching the best handicap class. Red Heckle Avas only seventh in order of favouritism, but the betting Avas so close that his price was under “the limit.”

A TIGHT FINISH. Sarnia 1732, Denier 1717, Camisader 1544, the Clifford bracket 1422 and Teri 1416, were the popular selections for the Seymour Handicap, but Denier’s backers did not get a run in the race. The Taranaki gelding bolted the reverse Avay for a mile and a half, and was Avithdrawn from the race. When a start Avas effected, Tembronev Avas badly left. Panther, Teri, Broadmoor, Smithereens and Camisade’- Avent away in a bunch, and at the top of the bend Broadmoor and Smithereens had established a lead of three lengths from Panther, Teri and Camisader. Teri and Smithereens were in charge tAvo furlongs from ,iome, Avith Panther putting in a run on the rails. A great struggle ended in favour of Panther, who defeated Teri by a neck, Avith Smithereens half a length aAvay. Camisader Avas fourth, tAvo lengths aAvay, and Tembroney next. Saxmia never emerged from the ruck.

LAUGHING PRINCE AGAIN. The Stead Cup will go clown in history as one of the most remarkable betting races ever seen in the Dominion. All form pointed to the race being a match between Laughing Prince and Rapier, but so much support came for the other runners that it was possible to back both the favourites and, irrespective of which won, to show a handsome profit. Laughing Prince was first choice with 3177 units, Rapier carried 2 658, and there was as much as 2248 on Goblin Market. Laughing Prince and Goblin Market led off f-om Rapier and Silver Paper, and they ran in those positions for half a mile. The order then was Goblin Market, Silver Paper, Laughing Prince, Rapier and Hoylake, but there was no daylight anywhere. The first six furlongs took 1.18, then the pace improved. Rapier shot up at the home turn and led into the straight from Silver Paper and Laughing Prince. Then the favourite took charge and won without being extended, by a length and a half from Rapier, who beat Hoylake by a length. Silver Paper was a length behind the English horse. The last halt mile was run in 48 2-ssec, and the winner literally laughed at the opposition. ORATRIX'S BROTHER. The Wanganui Guineas winner Consent was installed a short-priced favourite for the Stonvhurst Handicap, which drew a field of nine three-year-olds. Consent finished up carrying almost exactly twice the amount invested on Prickles, the second fancy. Mooregas was first to show from Consent and Concentrate, Prickles being last to move. After going a couple of furlongs Mooregas was just in front of Concentrate, with Calamine and Consent next. Calamine took charge at the top from Concentrate, Consent, Prickles and Mooregas. At the home turn Prickles and Consent both lost their places. Roi de Val and Concentrate were in charge a furlong from home and Concentrate, staying on well, won by a head from Mooregas, who finished fast and beat Roi de Val by a length. Rabbi was a neck away fourth, just heading Pride and Calamine. Rabbi and R.oi do Val appeared to cause the trouble at the top of the straight. Consent was apparently tiring at the time, but Prickles had come from the rear and was going strongly. Concentrate is a brother to the Cup winner Oratrix. FIRST SIGHT FIRST HOME. Mundane was made a pronounced favourite for the Fendalton Handicap, the concluding event of Carnival Week, but First Sight, Mendip and Sir Roy were very evenly backed for second choice. Pinic Note, Mandane, Philippic and Vawanl showed up first from an even despatch, and at the mile post Pink Note was a couple of lengths ahead of Mandane, who held a similar advantage from Vaward and Rotor. Front Rank and Sir Roy were whipping in the field. Passing the six furlongs Pink Note, Mandane. Rotor and Vaward still comprised the leading division, with First Sight, at the head of the next bunch. Pink Note, Mandane and Rotor ran to the home turn together, two lengths clear of First Sight, but once in the straight the last-named joined the leaders, and drawing away at the distance, Mrs Grigg’s gelding won decisively by a length and a half. There was a spirited contest for the minor places, Mandane, Rotor, Mendip and Sir Roy reaching the wire in a cluster, with only necks and heads separating them.

The records broken or equalled at Flemington on Saturday by Gothic (2.29 J), and Bacchus ( 2.5 7i ) for 14 miles and 13 miles i espectively, were previously held by Wedding Day 2.,‘104 at Randwick, and Commendation 2.57 Jat Trentham.
