SEAMEN AND MINERS.
FIGHTING AGREEMENT < PROPOSED. INCREASED WAGES ASKED FOR. By Telaffrtufh —iPraii Association. WELLINGTON, April 30. An agreement has- been, drawn up between the United Mine Workers of New Zealand and the _ New Zealand Seamen’s Union containing the lollowing principal provisions: (1) Seamen are to refuse to carry coal should miners, be engaged m a fight, and to give financial support if necessary. ■ „ , _■ (2) Miners ere to refuse to produce coal for "scab’’ ships if are engaged in a fight, - and to gi financial support if necessary. (3) Before either Union takes action which may involve the other, the other tJiiion is to be consulted.' (4) These proposals are to be sudmittetl to the rank and file of both Unions for endorsement. * Both parties to the compact are seeking new agreements with tne, employers. ■ . - . .. The National Council of the Miners’ Union recently decided to make the following claims upon ntine owners, to cover all districts--7J per cent, increase in wage rates 5 per cent, increase in tonnage ar.d yardage rates; 5 per cent, increase in timber rates. It is claimed _ -hat there should be a weekly minimum of £4 12s fid for all adult workers. • Ten days’ holiday for all workers with service of one year or mor<3 is suggested, and there are other claims covering details of mining work.
