POLICE COUP IN MELBOURNE.
Note Forgers Surprised.
COMPLETE PLANT DISCOVERED. (United Press . Association —By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received April 29, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, April 29. The police effected the biggest and most sensational coup for years, when they raided a suspected house at Ocean Grove, Geelong, and discovered a complete engraving plant, and ten thousand counterfeit £5 notes. A man and a young woman named Stephen Kara sick wick (a process engraver) and. Sima Marchenko, were arrested. When the police broke into thß house, Karasiekwick was working on the printing machine, with a loaded gun beside him, but he did not attempt to use it. The house is situated in a remote pari of a thick scrub, and the police force entry completely surprised the inmates.
The raid is the 'outcome of police investigations regarding the circulation of forged £lO notes at recent Melbourne and Sydney race meetings. Further sensational developments are expected.
LIBEL SUIT. ECHO OF RELIEF OF MONS. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) OTTAWA, April 27. At Cobourg, a spontaneous demonstration of applause marked a dramatic moment in the Ourrie libel suit. The defence counsel began shouting question after question at the former Commander, when applause broke out, accompanied by a stamping of feet till the sheriff called for order. Sir Arthur Currie was on the stand the greater part of the morning. His evidence was a brief recital of orders received to continue the pursuit ot the enemy at Mons. He denied the, casualties on Armistice Day.
SACRIFICE OF LIVES ALLEGED. BOTH SIDES ACTIVE. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received April 29, 5.5 p.m.) OITAWA, April 28. Evidence in the Currie libel case, which is being heard at Coburg (Ontario), was completed on Saturday. Sir Arthur Currie, was in the witness box for a total of nine hours. It is expected counsel will address the jury on Monday, after which the case will go to the jury. The trial, which enters its third week, was marked by strong attacks on General Currie, for alleged useless sacrifice of life in connection with the capture of Mons. Many army officers testified strongly in favour of the ability of General Currie as Commander.
