A new child novelist has appeared, tliis time in England. Her name is Peggy Temple, ‘‘Peggy” being short lor Gertrude Margaret, and her novel "The Admiral and Others,” lias already gone through four large editions. Peggy is the. daughter of a London journalist. Air Alichael Temple. She is 13 years old now, but she was just a few months over 12 when she wrote her book. On Tuesday evening at Geraldine, a meeting was held to form a ‘‘Young Peoples Branch” of the AA.C.T.U. Quite a number of young people were present, and Aliss Bradshaw, Dominion Organiser of the AY.C.T.U., gave a verv interesting address. It was decided to hold, the next meeting at Presbyterian Hall, and new members will be made welcome. The will

lake the form of a short address, followed by games, musical items, and supper. 1 see that Aliss Radclyffe Hall lias been awarded the Fomina A'io Heurouse ■ prize for Tier clever novel, "Adam s Breed,” which had such a popular success in this country. The "Femina” prize is an annual award, made both m France and in England, for the best fiction work of the year, the final award to the English nor’ being made by the French committee, nd vice versa. Both juries are composed of distinguished literary folk. The three novels chosen to be "sent to the French committee were "Adam’s Breed,” “Lolly AVilloives” —a provocative witchcraft study by Sylvia Townsend, AVarner —and "The Informer,” by. Liam O’Flaherty. Aliss Hall’s story of a Solio waiter easily carries off the palm. Black stockings (says a _ London paper) show unmistakeable signs of coming back into favour. At the Drapery Exhibition, where many of the largest stocking manufacturers are showing their newest ranges of colours, there is not a black stocking to be seen. There are wonderful shades of “mauve nude,” "cloud,” "aluminium,” and so on, but “dark stockings,” said the designer of one firm, "will not be worn as long as skirts remains short.” Yet in Hyde Park on Sunday mornings, whore the real trend of dress popularity can be studied, you see slender legs encased in liose of the finest black Milanese silk, and in Regent Street and the Strand you notice black silk stockings here and there. The woman who has time and money to spend on dress will probably always favour the coloured stocking with a short frock. But the busy girl, who has little time to attend to her own affairs, thinks black stockings splendid. They are economical and do not have to be so frequently

washed. The Te Moana ' School Committee were favoured with a good night for tlioir fortnightly euchre party and danco last Friday evening. There was a good, attendance of visitors and of local residents. Tlio prizes were won bv -.—Ladies, Miss Frances Gregan; men, Mr J. Mackay; consolation prizes, Mrs Wadne and Mrs Dan Mac Kay.
