Tests carried out by the State Forest Service, on small clear specimens of timber, have proved that insignis pine is as strong as New Zealand 'White pine, and is only a little inferior in strength to rimu. Its uses closely resemble those of tho two timbers mentioned. An exhaustive series of tests on the suitability cf insignis pine for cheese crate construction have indicated that it is just as suitable for this class of work as imported spruce and hemlock, which are at present used in fairly largo quantities. It is for size inferior to white pine, but if the battens are increased to half an. inch in. w lit ill, this lnterorny is overcome. Its use for butter containers is at present confined, owing to tainting occurring, but with the future practice of interior paraffining, as at present carried out on spruce boxes in America, it will find ready use for this class of work. Lnsignis pine is the easiest timber in New Zealand i» trcai «iui wood preservatives and it readily absorbs them, even in die cold. 'ilie American W ood Preservers’ Association, by actual service tests, lias established the life of creosoted pine posts and poles _at 21. C years. Creosoted insignis pine posts can therefore, confidently be expectou to give a life approaching this figure. Tests on large sized beams prove that, as a structural timber, insignis pine is as strong as both rimu andf white pme, and is moreover approxmately 80 per cent, as strong as douglas fir, the main structural timber in America. Reports of the attack on insignis pine in dwelling houses by borer are rare. Jts ready absorption of preservatives, moreover, makes it easy to counteract borer attack.
