CHARGE OF MURDER.
STATION BOY ARRAIGNED. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Received April 28, 10.30 p.m. SYDNEY, April 27. The trial of James Hughes, a boy employed at Poolamacca station, near Broken Hill, who is charged with the murder of his employer’s little daughter, has commenced at Broken Hill. Accused pleaded not guilty, and from the dock said the statement he made to the police was true. He added that as time went on he found it harder to tell the truth. (The boy, Janies Hughes, left his employment, shortly after the body of his employer’s little daughter was found buried. When arrested and charged with the murder, he made a statement to the police. He said he put Joan Smith on a horse, which was frightened when he pulled out a handkerchief, and threw the girl. As she showed no signs of life at the end of a quarter of an hour, and as he feared he would be blamed for putting her on the horse, he buried her body in a rabbit hole, which he deepened. He was sure the child was dead when he buried her.)
