The Chancellor (Dr. Marx), speaking at a mass meeting at Essen, referred to tho European steel agreement. lie pointed out that the people eoidd not conclude econbmic peace pacts, and at the same time bo in a state of political warfare. Further relaxation of the tension might therefore be expected in the political realm. Dr. Marx renewed his assurance that Germany meant loyally to collaborate with the other members of the League of Nations, and'had every confidence that a satisfactory solution would bo forthcoming from • the StresemannBriand conversations. Capital totalling £10,000,000,000, of which £4,700,000,000 was British money, met at Broadlands yesterday. The actual decision of the conference was to appoint a standing committee, representing German and British industrialists in equal proportions, in order to pursue investigation regarding prospects of mutual assistance in re-establishing prosperous industry in Europe, and in augmenting the opportunities for profitable employments.
Details of the conversations arc secret, but it is understood that a hopeful and wholesome industrial understanding was revealed.
An absolute denial is issued that international trusts will be formed, as the outcome of the Conference. The British chairman of the standing committee is Sir Robert Horne (formerly Chancellor of the Exchequer), and tho German is Dr. Duisberg.
