BOWLING.

WEST END CLUB. The official opening of the West End Club took place on Saturday, when, in spite of the inclement weather, a large gathering of members and their friends took place on the green. The president (Mr T. W. Manchester) extended a hearty welcome to all, and expressed regret that owing to the wet state of the green, no bowling would be possible that day. The president then called upon His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace) to formally open the green for the coming season. His Worship, in doing so, heartily congratulated the West End Club on their success last season and wished them still greater success in the one just commencing. He also referred to the very united spirit in the Club, and to the way in which the lady friends of the Club had always, coiiie forward to help to make the Club so successful as it was.

Mr B. Manning (on behalf of the Centre and the Ashbury Club), Mr L. B. James (Timaru), and Mr W. Watson (Kia Toa), also congratulated the Club, and wished it every success during the coming season. Mr S. Harper (Fairlie) telegraphed regretting his unavoidable absence, and conveying the best wishes of the Fairlie Club. , ; Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies. The Club are indebted to Mr and Mrs Manchester, Mrs. Trott and Mrs J. Smith and their assistants for the delicious tea provided, and the pretty way in which the tables were decorated with flowers of the Club’s colours (blue and white)*
