Detective Hammond .said dofondant luul a his wife, who was living with liei sister at Ruawai. Do was worried about the matter, and asked his s.ster-in-law, whoso name was Mane, to send a telegram asking his. wile to return, and brillg tile children, but she roiused. He then wrote out a telegram reading “Come down home. Urgent. Bring kids. Mario.” Defendant wrote the name and address of his sister-in-law on the back of the telegram. In this way the case came into the hands of tne 1 olice. Defend- , ant hardly realised the seriousness ot . his action. Ho was now out of woik. j Tho .Magistrate (Mr Hunt) .said tho ; public must he warned of the serious- . ness of the offence. The maximum i pmmlty was £IOO, or 12 months’ im- | prisonment. Defendant was convicted and ordered to yonic up for sentence when called upon, and was also ordered , to pay 10s costs. ;
