From August 26 to September 30, 160 bags of wheat were shipped nom Timaru to North Island ports.

The Commonwealth Government recently inaugurated a competition for the best-design, for a postage stamp to commemorate tlie opening of the first Federal Parliament at, Conberra, on fitli May. It was announced that the first prize was won by Ronald A. Harrison, of Elwood, Victoria, and the second prize by J. O. Lyons, of Prospect, South Australia. The Commonweal ti Postmaster-General states that cablegrams were received from .some competitors in New Zealand, asking for an extension of time in order to permit thoir resigns to roach Melbourne. For the information of such competitors, it is announced that all such designs, though they arrived late, received full consideration.

A playlet dealing with the life of St. Frances, of Assissi, will bo broadcast from the King’s Hall, by courtesy of tho Independent Theosophical Society, on the occasion of the seventh centenary of the death of that famous saint, immediately after the church service. An organ recital will be given from the Presbyterian Church, Manly, at 4.15, and at 6.50 the service, from tho Enmore Church of Christ wi'l be broadcast, The programme will be continued by the Manly Band playing from the Rialto Theatre, Manly.

The Friesian merit lists for August contain some information of great.interest to dairy farmers and breeders of pedigree dairy cattle in Canterbury. Mr A. ,S. Ehvorthy, of Holme Station, Pareora, lias at present nine Friesians on semi-official test, and among them tho four-year-old, Pareora Cherry Blossom, has given 18,437.81 b milk and 674.91 b fat in 363 days; the junior three-year-old Pareora Hero Fancy, 15,204.71 b milk and 577.151 b fat in 348 days; the junior two-year-old Pareora Butter Girl Cadillac 10,724.61 b milk and 417.371 b fat in 229 days; the two-year-old Pareora Ethel Posch 9470.21 b milk and 342.061bs fat in 241 days; the two-year-old Pareora Pearl Posch 19541 b milk and 71.71 b fat in 48 days; tho two-year-oid Pareora Transvaal Posch 1573.21 b milk and 65.281 b fat in 36 days; the two-year-old Pareora Mentor Posch 1375.51 b milk and 58.731 b fat in 30 days; Pareora Model Cadillac 1015.91 b milk and 38.091 b fat in 28 days; and Pareora Cadillac. Snow 1255.41 b, milk and 53.351 b fat in 26 days. This last return is equal to more than 2Jib butter-fat dai’y—a great return from a two-year-old heifer. Mr Thos. Shcrriff, of Clandeboye, Temuka, has four Friesians on semi-official test. Rosevale Sylvia Model Keyes, a four-year-old, has finished her year’s test with the excellent total of 22,599.41 b milk and 754.731 b fat, equal to a production of 943.411 b butter in the year. This is the highest record in Canterbury for any brood for a four-year-old heifer, and only two cows (both Friesians— Lohgbeacli Everlasting 795.931 b fat and Lady Rosebud 794.41 b fat) have over beaten this record. Another Friesian cow, Model Sadie Dekol (J. McAnulty, Winelimorc), . produced 838.131 b fat,.but failed to qualify fop a certificate by not calving within the specified period. The three other heifers that Mr Sherrifl lias on test are Melrose Svlvin Griselda Keves, 14,080.21 b milk, 539.521 b fat in 353 days: Melrose Slvvia. Echo Lassie, 14,591 lb milk and 496.941 b fat in 330 days ; and Rosevale Queen Isobel Posch, 1650.91 b milk and 57.941 b fat in 28 days. As these throe heifers arc junior two-year-olds, the merit of the above performance will bo recognised by dairy farmers.
