BRIBERY CHARGES.

Giving evidence before the Select Parliamentary Committee, inquiring into the alleged bribery charges, Mr Farley extended the charges to the City Municipal Council. He said that in May, he approached a Labour Alderman on the Council, and asked him for a certain position vacant in the Council. He was tokl this would be possible, if he paid £IOO. After that he saw another Alderman, and told him what had occurred. The latter asked him if it were possible to make an offer, to make the offer to a Labour Alderman. He replied “yes,” and accompanied him to the Civic Reform Party’s Office, where he was told he would receive £lO weekly and expenses to secure a conviction against a member of the City Council, and one member of the party said he would pay him £2500 out of his own pocket, if he would go on with the work of securing a conviction. Wtiness admitted that ho would receive a certain amount for expenses. AVitness added that the suggestion to bribe members of Parliament came from tho .same source, and he was taken to the Nationalist Headquarters, where he alleged a plot was mooted. Farley then made sweeping allegations of corruption on railway construction works. Other witnesses flatly contradicted the statements, one characterising Farley as a mental derelict.
