OLD BOYS’ REUNION. Apologies for absence, were received from Messrs T. Sinclair (New Plymouth), P. McConville (Petone), R. Irwin (Wanganui), R. MMCenzio (Christchurch), R. B. Bell (rimaiu), W. Lewis (Palmerston North),: 'WWebb (Nelson); E. A. Irwin (Lyttelton), W. M. Stubbs (Martinborongh), W. Coe (St. Albans), E. Wako (Auckland), W. C. Burd (Wellington), W. G. Irwin (Timaru), J. K. Macdonald (Christchurch), W. MeClatchio (Christchurch), C. G. Baker (Timaiu), and the Hon. F. J. Rollcston, Attorney-General. The president (Mr A. Thoreau) extended a .cordial welcome to all old bovs present. On looking back many vears, one would romemher when the Main School was tho only school in Timaru. Time had since flown, and additional schools had made their appearance. • It showed that education had increased in Timaru, and the population had also increased* Education played a t prominent part in a boy’s welfare, but another important feature was the physical development and the clean and healthy mind of a boy. The most pleasing part of the reunion wa/: the host of congratulation? that had been received from absent old boys. He congratulated Mr Boys and Mr Stevenson on bringing the Drum and Fife Band to the function, and hoped that their efforts m future would be attended with success. (Applause.). Mr J. W. Holdgate, in proposing the toast of the Main School Committee and teachers, went back to the early, da.vs and gave anecdotes of those times. He spoke highly of the. work performed by the committeemen in charge- of the welfare of the school. The Staff of the school from the early days had all proved themselves capable men and women, and the present headmaster (Mr B. H. Low), had proved himself well worthy of his position. (Applause.) . In replying to the toast. Mr J. W. Preen thanked the boys for the way they had honoured the toast. • Ho referred to tho work they had done at the school. They had had rather an uphill fight as far as finance was concerned, but thanks to the Old Boys’ Association things .were now looking brighter. Their work on the committee was pleasurable on account of the benefit to the scholars attending the school, who were well worth working for.. Mr B. H. Low, on behalf of.tho staff, returned thanks for the toast. He endorsed the remarks passed about tho committee, who, lie said, gave* tho staff every possible assistance.. ITo referred to his amicable associations with the committee, -who had given him, as headmaster, every support and assistance. The.staff wore very loyal, and he could not wish for a bettor band of teachers. He hoped that the reunion would he kept up. as it was an ideal link with the past, and kont evergreen the memories of the old school. (Applause.) . The Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace), in proposing the toast of the Old Boys’ •Association, said it was the principal toast of the evening. Ho expressed pleasure at being present that evening at such a gathering, which brought back pleasant recollections of past days. It w r as at. .this time of life when men nnproeiated what had been done for their welfare by their teachers —even the manv good hidings tliev had received at, their' hands. ('.Laughter.’) He hoped the Association would prosper and meet. -with all the surecss and assistance it really deserved. ’Among the old bovs of the Main. School were men who held as high a position as a judge of the Supreme Court. '(Anplnuso.) . Mr .T. Palliser, in renl.v, said he was p’eased to ho among the old bovs that night. He was sure that all old hoys were good citizens, and he was certain thev wpto doing the best possible for their nhl school. (Hear, hear.) Mr T. C. Baker, who was in reminiscent vein, made a hapnv speech riving anecdotes of tho. old davs. H" honed that new the committee had had a verv successful year, their future efforts woidd he crowned with success. (Anolause.) Mr W. Best. pronosing the toastof “Visiting Old Bovs.” hoped that all the visitors present iron'd o-o hack with many pleasant roenllecHons of the annual reunion. Mr O. Emmarson (Hastings), in Teplv. thanked ah liis old friends for the invitation to he present that evening at a function that he would not mi.sr for nnvthing.
