PARLIAMENT.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. By Telegraph —Press Association WELLINGTON, June 24. The Legislative Council met alt 2.50 p.m. to-day. PIGEON SHOOTING. The Captive Birds Shooting Prohibition Bill was introduced b.v the Hon. G. M. Thomson, and read a.first time. The Bill is designed to prohibit the uso of captive birds in all shooting carried on under artificial conditions, and seeks to inflict a penalty not exceeding £250. ; ADDRESS-IN-REPLY. The Address-in-Reply was moved by the Hon. T. S: Weston, who referred to several of the matters'dealt with in the Governor’s Speech. I-Ie emphasised Uie necessity tor private savings and the aecunnnulation of capita!, and said that three other most urgent requirements of the country were the proposed universal pensions scheme, reduced taxation, and improvement of technical education, especially the agricultural side of it.
The motion was seconded by the Hon C. J. Carrington, who urged increased production, to make up for the declining balance of trade, and advocated greater productivity from land, especially from rich areas in the north. Economy, thrift, and judicious expenditure should be practised by both Government and people. Sir John Sinclair spoke chiefly on the subject of Imperial relations, and stressed the inadequacy of existing provision for consultation between the Mother Country and the Dominions on matters of Imperial policy. The Council adjourned at 4.10 p.m., on the motion of the Hon. G. M. Thomson. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met "at 2.30 p.m. Formal business was limited to the receipt of petitions, of which there were only two.
