LATE MR. C. N. ORBELL.
LEVELS COUNTY COUNCIL.
MEETING ADJOURNED
The monthly meeting of the Levels County Council to have been held yesterday morning was adjourned until Friday morning, as a mark of sympathy in the death of the late chairman, Mr C. N. Orbell. Tho chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick) expressed his sincere regret at Mr Orbell’s demise, saying that during his long years of office the late chairman had done much "for the Council, and his loss would be felt throughout the district. He moved :
“That this Council sincerely regrets the death of Mr C. N. Orbell and wishes to place on record its deep appreciation of the long years of invaluable service rendered by him as chairman of the Levels County Council; and also desires to express to Mrs Orbell and family its heartfelt sympathy with them in. their bereavement.”
Mr C. E. Kerr, in seconding the motion, said when one looked over Mr Orbell’s long years of service, during 30 of which he acted as chairman, the fact that' he had never been opposed for his seat, showed the splendid confidence the ratepayers had in him. He was a man of grit and determination, and one who, by his publio-spiritedness, set a sterling example to the younger generation’. i The motion was carried in silence, after which the meeting adjourned. REMARKS BY THE MAYOR. Pribr to commenqlng the ordinary business of the Timaru Borough Council last night, His Worship the Mayor made sympathetic roferenco to the death of tlie late Mr C. N. Orbell.
Mr Wallace said that through the death of Mr Orbell the district had suffered a very severe loss. Very few men had performed so much public service. as 1 the late Mr Orbell, who had served the ratepayers cf Levels County for more than thirty years, during all of which time he was chairman, first of the old Levels Road Board, and then of the Levels Council. Such length of service as chairman of a public hody was probably uneanailed in New Zealand. Mr OrDell had also served on other local bodies, and the ratepayers owed him a deep debt of gratitude. His Worship then moved:—-
“That this Council place on record its deep appreciation of the abu and faithful public service rendered by the late Mr C. N. Orbell during the inany years that, he had represented the residents of South Canterbury on various local bodies.” The motion was carried by silent vote, all standing.
Owing to the death of Mr C. N. Orbell, the meet of the South Canterbury Hunt, arranged for Saturday, has been cancelled.
