AMERICA’S NEW CRUISER POLICY

In the House of Commons, Mr John Harris called attention to the American Bill authorising the construction of eight how cruisers, each of 10,000 tons. He suggested that the Government, should approach the United States in regard to the possibility of another naval conference. Mr Ramsay Macdonald, in reply, referred to a statement by President Coolidge on April 22, that it appears impracticable at present to attempt any further limitations of armaments. He was glad to find that President Coolidge agreed with the attitude of the Labour Gbvernment. He had always taken up the attitude that before discussing limitation of armaments we must first remove some of the difficulties of the political situation in Europe.

Mr Britten (Vice-Chairman of tho House Naval Affairs Committee), introduced a Bill to re-appropriato 6,500,000 dollars to alter tho gun turret elevations of certain battleships. He declared the American experts in international law affirm that’the United States lias a right to make tho change, despite British opposition, under the Washington Treaties.
Mr Britten stated the range of American guns was inferior r.o the British.
