After a fortnight’s dislocation as 3 result of holidays and strike, efforts are being made to normalise trade. Wheat appears to be all in millers* and merchants’ hands. The shortago is more pronounced than was expected. A monthly increase of -id per bushel operates lrom tlie beginning of May. This month’s values are: —Tuscan 5a 3sd, Hunters os 5Jd, Pearl 5s 7*d. The price at which Victorian wheat is being purchased is not disclosed, but it is believed to be not more than thei figure quoted. Poultry keepers are beiim kept supplied with stocks of fowl wheat, but there is practically no fowl wheat about. It is understood that the North Island has been fully supplied from Australian shipments. . Oats are in the peculiar position or not being wanted, and yet being firm. This paradoxical position is due to sellers having to hod oats and name a port of delivery, whilst the buyer does not know whore he is going to place them. ifi Potatoes are coming forward tremv, but shipping space is very limited. Merchants seeking space for 2000 sacks have had to be content with eveial hundred. The explanation is that m anticipation of tlie strike lasting longei, shipping was diverted elsewhere. Digging has been proceeding vigorously in Canterbury during the week, and had shipping been available supplies would have gone north. A allies on trucks are quoted at £5 5s per ton.
