LAKE TEKAPO.
THE LOCAL SCHEME
ENCOURAGING PROSPECTS
The scheme for obtaining electric current iron) Lake Tekapo to serve South Canterbury is creating a great deal ot interest.
Mr T. L. Hart, chairman of the South Canterbury Lower Hoard, Inis just returned from Wellington, and in conversation with a "Herald” reporter yesterday, he mentioned that he had discussed Mr Hall’s Tekapo scheme with some eminent engineers in the capital city, and they had told him that the scheme was quite feasible. Tire soundness oi the engineering principles, both hydraulic and electrical, had been acknowledged by more than one engineer. The object "of th c survey now being made is to provide exact data lor the designing engineers in London to prepare working drawings and specifications for the whole undertaking. Mr Furkert, Chief Government Engineer, will leave 'Wellington to-night, and will proceed to Lake Tekapo on Monday or Tuesday next. The party which will accompany him from Timaru will be representative purely of technical and financial interests.
Thc ample funds which have been provided for the preliminary investigations have been found by a patriotic resident of Timaru wlio has no political interests, and who is actuated solely by a desire to forward the interests of Timaru and South Canterbury. The cost of the survey_ for which this resident has made himself responsible is estimated at between £2OO and £30!). Another offer of substantial monetary assistance lias been made, but as it was not needed it was declined with thanks.
