ADVANCES TO SOLDIERS.
AMENDED LEGISLATION NEEDED. ■ ■'■•--.' ———' (Per Press WELLINGTON, July 31. At a meeting of tlie Wellington War Relief Association yesterday a letter was .read from the South Canterbury Relief Society, stating that it had lefprc it within the last month throe cases in which the Government Advances to Settlers Office had written demanding payment of arrears of priii-' chpnl which accrued during the soldiers' absence on service. The opinion was expressed in the ■letter that as in almost every, case the whole of the military pay and allowances had been used in the maintenance •>f dependents, the Advances to Settlers Office should capitalise these amounts ""id allow them to be paid at the end >f the ordinary period of repayment of ';he mortgage. The chairman said similar cases had occurred in Wellington'; ■*.
It was decided to endorse the action "■aken by the Timaru Society, and that he Minister of Finance should be written to urging the need for amended legislation to meet such cases.
