Massey Greene, speaking at the annual dinner of the Chamber of Commerce, referring to the strike, said that "the Government was determined to see law observed. He warned members of the Chamber against the prevailing unrest caused by high prices,.and appealed to them to tackle the problem from the community standpoint, and thereby check the public outcry for Governmental interference. He concluded by saying that he believed the leaders of commerce were able to do more to settle unrest than all the Governments Of Australia combined. The chairman said that as evidence J of prosperity, the value of the exports between 1914 and 1918 amounted to £330.000.000, the purchases bv Britain 1 amounting to £220,000,000. Although the Federal Council of Seamen's Unions refuses to' discuss the seamen's negotiations with Mr Millpn, it is understood that the suggested "oasis of settlement includes WaMie's release and the immediate, summoning of a round table conference at which Walslie shall be present, the seamen to resume when the conference is actually sitting.
