LIEBKNECHT AND ROSA LUXEMBURG. HOW THEY MET THEIR DEATHS. Australian and N.Z. Gable Assn; COPENHAGEN, January 17. After arrest Dr Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg were taken to the hotel Aden, the .headquarters of the Guard and Cavalry Divisio'n. Dr. Liebknecht at first denied his identity, but when searched his identity was established. He was then taken to an automobile,; but the crowd outside were so infuriated that they seized Dr. Liebknecht and soundly thrashed him. As the crowd increased they forced an entry into the hotel. The Guards attempted to remove Rosa Luxemburg but the crowd threw themselves upon her and beat her unconscious. In this condition she was placed in an automobile and driven away. The car, however, was stopped at a bridge, men jumped in and shot her through the head. The mob took possession of the body and its present whereabouts are unknown. Meanwhile Dr Liebknecht had been shot in attempting to escape. His captors hustled him into a motof-ear which broke down going to the Moabit prison, where the officers in command ol the escort determined to take him pending the"' Government's decision. Th officers asked Dr Liebknecht it he wanted another car or preferred to walk. /Dr Liebknecht said: "I will walk."
A few moments later, he made a dash for freedom and paid no heed to the calls to stop though the escort had raised their rifles. He was brought down at a few yards' range death being instantaneous. , FIGHTING CONTINUES. LTEBKNEOHT'S LAST MESSAGE. AMSTERDAM, January 17. - "Fighting"continued in Berlin on Wednesday evening around tho Reichstag Building. Grenades were fresly used. Fifty thousand, copies of the "Rote Fahne" were seized, containing Dr Liebknecht's last article, declaring that he and Rosa Luxemburg had not tied. He said, "We are not beaten. Whether they chain us or not victory will b'e ours. Spartacus means a world revolution. . Extreme nervousness is felt in Berlin that the deaths of Dr Liebknecht, and Rosa Luxenburg will be the cause -...0f reprisals. ' Most people fear fresh violence and there is the .samp tension as prior to the Bolshevik ribing, but the Government is fully prepared. The whole of Berlin is in military occupation. The search for arms continues. The 'police.,and military are empowered " to search people" in- the streets without question. ' Crowds in the streets are absolutely forbidden." The "Daily Express's'' Geneva correspondent states that Switzerland is threatened with an invasion of Teutonic agents. Austria has issued 4.0,000 passSwitzerland and Germany has issued 28,000, mostly for business men, financiers and commercial travellers. Fifty-two Austrian and German firms, with a large capital, have registered in Switzerland this year.
