ADDRESS BY SIR ROBERT STOUT. : Per Press Association. DUNEDIN. Jan. 16. The Senate of the University of New Zealand opened to-day when the chaa-' cellor, Sir Robert Stout, gave an. address. He said that the number of students at the University last year necessarily was affected by the war, i but it was mjiazing liow soon the younger men and women marched forward to tJie University and Colleges. The number of candidates this year for tho_ entraaoo examination was 1914 against 1710 last year, but tlnere was a falling oil in the number of candidates for the degree examinations. Tha respective numbers were 1293 in 1916, 1155 in 1917. During the year 1916-17 there were 21 applications for tea vacancies at the Royal Military College at Duntroon, and of these 14 qualified. The ten who obtained the highest marks gained admission. This showed that New Zealand students took no second place. The results showed that there were 115 Australian and 23 New Zealanders commission od for active service to .Tuno 30, ISI6, and of those who obtained first class .passes Sf were Australians. and_S New ZeaJanders, or not_quito 24_per. cent, of Aiistralians to 32 per cent, of New I Zealanders.
