SOLDIERS' LETTERS
NOTE FROM WASHDYKE MAN. Writing from France to his mother, Mrs W. Woir of Washdyke, Private F. Weir, mentions that he had met Private Ben. Fox of Waimataitai, and tiie soldier's life seemed, to he agreeing with him.
Privato Weir wishes the war was over as he is longing to return to New Zealand. He says:—We are going to get into it at lust and have a rmack at Fritz. By the end of next week wo will be weil into tho fighting. We have lots of fun though, and wo are quite cheerful. The life is pretty strenuous, wit we have benefited by it. There are aixilot of Timaru men over here. Wo have been filling in time at night by digging trenches, preparing for what i"s before us. They give ns plenty of night, drill now, so it will not be long iNtfore we aro into it. Our tents are all palSted so that the Germans won't see them This place is very pretty. All the paddocks have crops in them. The French people are great. I can't understand thein at all. AVe can hoar the guns i rattling away, and the Germans will soon be getting all thev want •'
