Accused, who is stone deaf, pleaded guilty and was remanded until Saturday for sentence. The agricultural class of the Terauka Technical School will meet to-morrow evening to hear a very instructive lecture on fertilisers and the soils for which they are suited. Samples of manures may be brought to the class and analyses and approximate values will be given. Questions will be answered, and altogether the evening will be most profitable, and quite a number of farmers have signified their intention of being present. At tlie Magistrate's Court, Temuka, yesterday, a hoy was charged before Messrs A. Gibson and D. Mclmiea with having on or about August 10, at Winchester, stolen a p*ea rifle' valued, at 17s 6d, the property of T. H. Longford. Tlie boy pleaded guilty. ScrgeaJit Fitzgerald said that tha Accused took the rifle from Mr LangI'ord's store. It was not missed foe some time and •when Mr Langford, after making inquiries taxed the boy with tlie theft lie was rude and showed indifference. Mr Langford tlien reported the matter to the police to whom the boy confessed his guilt. Tho accused had not come under tho notice of the police previously. Tho accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence .when called upon.

A remarkable performance in the way of petrol consumption was put up on Thursday last on the Caledonian track, by Mr L. Edyvean, on a New Hudson motor cycle. Under the auspices of tho South Canterbury Motor Cycle Chib, a trial was held for the benefit of tha members, and to see what could be done on a smooth and regular surface. A' special tin, apart*from the tank, was fitted to each machine; and 5 ozs of petrol, carefully measured, was supplied to each rider, by the officials. Hie distance covered by Mr Edyvean on the supply was 6 miles 1106 yards, which works out at the rate of 220.5 miles to the gallon. Mr Edyvean was awarded the first prize iu his class, and wns warmly congratulated on his machine and its performance.
