The Shaw, Savili and Albion Company's steamer Kia Ora, which left Loudon on the 4th instant for Auckland, Wellington and Tlniaru, has 1750 .tons general cargo to discharge hero. The Beckeaham, now en route from Japanese. ports to Auckland, will arrive, in Timaru on 10th September, to land ISOO tons of superphosphate, eto. ■* Tho ' new steamer Maungonui, now •under construction in England, "will probably be used by the Union Company for the Pacific Royal Mail Line pending the completion of the 10,000fcan steamer which has been specially ordered for the Sydney, Auckland, and Vancouver service. The latest order provides for a sr>eed of from 16 to 17 knots. Tho vessel will he used in conjunction with the Makura. and Marama, tho Zealandia reverting to the New Zealand service, for whioh she was specially constructed. LAUNCH OF THE ZEALANDIO. The twin-ssrew steamer 2=alandic ■was' SEooasafully launched at Baifa&i lass Thursday "by Messrs Borland and rWolfi, Ltd. iiie new vessel, which been built for tho White Star Lino, for the Australian and New Zealand service, is477ft. long by 62ft. 9in. beam, and about 8000 tons gross renter, and has been specially designed tor the trade. She will have a. very large cargo cap;tcity£ in sis holds — two for general cargo and four insulated for carrying frozen cargo. The deck machinery and appliances for working the ship and cargo are of the most complete and approved type, there being, in addition tp the steam windlass, 19 steam winches and 21 derricks. Tho steering gear is of Harland and Wolfi's make, and is capable of being worked by fcole motor from the flying bridge. The refrigerating machinery is placed at the after end of the engine-room. The vessel is lighted throughout with electric light, and is fitted with electric belis. in the I saloon, state-rooms, captain's room, smoke-room and chart-room. There ■sill be accommodation for a number ©f' first-class pasaongors, with a comfortable saloon, smoke-room and_ state l loom; and a feature of the ship will "ie the accommodation specially arranged for third-class passengers in enclos"«d rooms, with space on the sheiter deck for third-class smoke-rooms and dining-room, and alto a third-class ladies' room—a provision that will doubtless be much appreciated. Tbe propelling -machinery consists of two sets of quadruple <-xp=.j3ion engines on the "balanced" principle.
