SOOTH CANTERBURY BEATS WANGANUI. The South Canterbury representative fifteen had a decisive victory ovor tho Wanganui team on the Athletic Grounds yesterday by 1G points to 3.1 Tlio game was fought in a spirit of friendly rivalry, and was played under good conditions. Tho ground, following on the recent rain, was in splendid condition, and everything was conducive to good play. At 3.15, in tho presence of about 1000 spectators the teams took the field amidst applause, as follows: WANGANUI (Blue and Black) C. Dustin, M. Stewart, M. Coutts, A. Siguall, C. Phillips, R. Campion, F. Atkins, L. Green, A. Schmidt, B. Martis, W. Batley, W. Dustin. R. O'Donnoll, C. Stratford, R. Leahy.

Wanganui won the- toss, and South Canterbury kicked off with tho sun in their faces. From the. return kick Lynch secured and found touch at the 23. From a scrum following the throw in the Green hacks put in a brisk passing rush and Mazo crossed tho lino, but the ball was ordered hack for a forward pass. Coles penned the Waganui full back under the posts, and from a resultant scrum a free was awarded to South Canterbury from which Horgan landed an easy goal. South Canterbury 3, Wanganui' nil. Tho kick-off was followed by even play about centre-field. A sudden Wauganui rush was checked bv Darrocli picking up and kicking to" touch, and though the visitors crept up again a quick reverse compelled Stewart, to speculate to save. Signal! on tho other wing was kept busy, and Darroch fielded one- of his kicks prettily and tried a pot at goal, tho hall falling short. From a scrum in midfield Dalton got the leather away to Darey, who sent it on quickly, ' but Lynch missed tho pass. Taking tho ball from a kick by O'Donnell Mazo made a, good run, but was obstructed and from tho free kick Spillano hud a shot at goal which fell short, Signall kicked back to Darroch, who, although tackled bv .Alartis got in a serviceable kick. Wauganui were again penalised, this time for offside, and Spillnne made a good attempt at goal.. Horgan and Dalton commenced a rousing rush in which the whole pack joined. Atkins saved by snapping tho ball up and kicking to touch. Scrummaging play folowed, and then Horgan and Niall started a rush which the Wanganui backs fumbled, and Coles dashed in. secured possession, and scored between tho posts. Spillnne goaled easily. South Canterbury 8 Wanganui 0. T. Fitzgerald was prominent in the play that followed, taking tho ball away at his feet repeatedlv. Lynch marked smartly from the looso, and Scott tried a long drop at goal which went under Scott next saved his sido from a dangerous Wanganui onslaught by marking at closo quarters. Duller play followed, the noxt incident being a poor attempt by Stewart to pot a goal. Wanganui put mora spirit into their play for .a time, but lost an attacking position through hard kicking and allowing tho Greens to force. From the return of a free to Wanganui, Campion, Phillips and Coutts took part in a passing rush across field which was ended by T. Fitzgerald grassing the last named. Play gravitated back to near Wanganui's line, Dalton kicking to touch from a scrum just as half-time was rung. South Canterbury 8, Wanganui nil. Wauganui opened well, and initiated a good forward rush which Darcy upset. Tho Blues secured possession from a scrum, and Atkins after a serviceable run passed to Phillips, who could not get past- Lynch. The Greens relieved. Soro closo forward work followed, and on ono ocasion Spillane neatly worked his way through and kicked well into tho Blues territorv. The Greens started a. passing rush, Darcy getting the leather to Spillane, who in turn passed to Lynch, tho lat- ; ter in turn throwing well out to Dar- | roch, who kicked too hard and tho jH_lu.es forced. The next important incident was a big forward charge by the Rlues. but Lynch cleverly fielded tend found the lino. From tho throw | in Dalton secured and kicked well into I tho BhlcV quarter. Both Coutts and ' Campion wore next conspicuous for ! sound defensive work, and the latter I for fine line kicking. From an ensu- i jng scrum the leather went hack to i well up field. Dustin mulled and was j tackled, but Signall retrieved at tho I Gritic.il moment with a luckv IzicU to i the other touch line. The Blues camo at it again, and got well into the Greens' 25 when Darrock camo through finely and found the half-way flag. Immediately afterwards Spillano marked, and Scott had an unsuccessful long drop at' goal. Offside play by the northerners was again in evidence, and Spillane's attempt at goal-kicking was smothered by the Blue forwards, who, headed by Martis, made for tho Green line. Scott stopped them, and a sweeping forward rush in which nearly all the forwards participated removed tho scene of operations to Wanganui's end, Phillips throwing tho leather out to terminate tho rush. Darey got away from a scrum, and tricking several opponents, pased far out to Spillano, who slippod, and a forward scramble resulted. At this stage play became a little too willing, and the game was temporarily stopped through Campion and then Maze losing their jerseys. Tho Greens on resuming put plenty of vim into their plav, but 'C. Dustin repulsed several attempts though his kicking for touch was weak. Dalton got clean away once, Dustin snapping a plucky mark and. stopping Kim. The kick'proved of no avail, Spillano returning it with double interest. Coles got away from a rack, and after a useful run threw across to Maze, who was brought back for a forward pass. Wanganui recovered surprisingly, and kept play in South Canterbury's quarter for some minutes, till Coles got away and with Lynch .improved the Green's position. The Green forwards took a hand, and Horgan picked up and went through the Blues. Ho kicked low down, bur the ball struck Dustin and rebounded, completely beating tho followers. Wanganui temporarily relieved, but the Greens invaded tho corner with a looso rush, and tho ball working across to tho centre Dalton snapped it in mid air and touched down under tho bar. Spillano kicked another easy goal. South Canterbury 13, Wanganui nil. The Greens showed to advantage again. Mooro headed tho forwards to tho L's. Dalton got possesion, and unselfishly passed when in a good scoring position to Keating, who" missed, and tho Blues temporarily relieved. Spillano was conspicuous in a ground rush, and Daltoi narrowly missed a score from a fcreak away. Eventually from somo loose j play following a scrum Horgan whipped j across, but Lynch made a poor attempt j to convert. " South Canterbury 16, Wanganui 0. The Greens continued to hold the upper hand, and a pretty passing rush saw Darroeh pushed out; near the corner. Leahy attempted a hard tackle of Coles, but cariio off second best. South Canterbury at this , stage were inclined to off-side, and Green had a shot from half-way, the ball falling short. Give and take play followed this, and Wanganui then finished up with their best nisi) of the [ day. Siimall fielded a long kick near his own 25. and running stronglv down . the line centred judiciously. Tho for- | wards kicked it on, and the ball went ( across the far corner, where Stewart ran up and dived across the line for the ; ball at the corner. Green failed to convert, and the last bell rang. Tries were obtained by » Valentino (2), McDonald (2, Lawry, ; and Thomson, Valentino converting ' one. Thomson's seoro .was the result 5 of.a brilliant run from half-way. Va- > lentino, Thomas and Hutton (backs), McDonald and J. Cuthbert (forwards) ' wero particularly prominent. For the 1 Losers Gillies and Harrold (backs), and } Seagar and Condon (forwards) shone 1 out.
MARIST WINS SCHOOL BANNER. Tho match between Marist and Main Schools preceded the representative game, and the largo crowd seemed to enjoy it. Main won the toss, and had the advantage of a serviceable wind. At the outset Herdman, Brosnahan. Hurdley and Kane gave an exhibition | of clean catching and long Inching that left play in mirlneld. Marist soon pressed, and were getting ready to score when Hurdley secured and kicked over the head of the Marist full back, who. however, succeeded in finding touch in his own 23. Main pushed homo the attack, and from a loose rush ! Campbell picked up and drew fi rs t blood. Herdman placed a nice goal. J.lain 5. Marist 0. Marist livened up after this reverse, and putting plenty of dash into their plav the forwards carried the ball to Main's territory, where after two or thrco attempts to score Brosnahan snapped up tho ov.nl and dived across alongside tho post. Craimitch converted—s points all.
