TIMABU-JTHURSDAY, AUG. 17th, 1911. (Before Mr V. G. Day, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS, ETC. A prohibition order was issued Against a man, on the application of his wife. Sydney Vincent, who appeared on a remanded charge of. helpless drunkenness, was convicted and discharged. Joseph Mcllroy, an aged, tottering boot-black, filthy, and in a weakened condition as a result of drink, pleaded guilty, and was remanded to August 24th, for medical treatment. AFFILIATION. 'William Green, on a charge of failing to provide maintenance for his illegitimate child, was remanded to appear at Te Kuiti on Mondav next. Bail was allowed, accused in £IOO, and one surety of £IOO. OBSTRUCTING A GUARD. A young man, for whom Mr Emslie appeared, pleaded not guilty: (1) To obstructing Guard J. P. Hughson on the train between Temuka and Timaru on August 3rd, and (2) to assaulting Guard J. P. Hughson. Sub-Inspector Phair related the facts of the case. Accused, slightly under the influence of liquor, was standing on a carriage platform, and refused to <n> inside the carriage when requested to do so. AVhen the guard stooped to pick "? » defendant struck him on the head, knocking his hat oif. The Railway Department brought the prosecution. r Mr Emslie pleaded for leniency, stating that the act was more of a ;!oke than anything else. The young men were returning from a football match. , H's. Worship said there was too much lannkimsm on trains when football teams were travelling. The players were not usually the offenders, but the barrackers." Accused would be convicted and discharged on the first charge, and fined 40s and costs on the
