——• N.Z. CABINET. AS FOUNT OF MERCY. AN ANTI-STRIKE BILL. I'rosa Association —By Tel.—Copyright. LONDON, August 16. "Truth," alleging that the New Zealand Government hastened Tahi Kaha's execution when a petition for reprieve was privately, by mistake, cabled to London,, suggests that the prerogative would be better in other hands than those of the New Zealand Government. THE FISHER, INTERVIEW. The •'Morning Post" declares tihat Mr Fisher's disavowal of the Stead interview has been whittled down sinco he returned to Melbourne. This is unfortunate, as Mr Fisher left the impression in South Africa and England that he sometimes speaks with two voices. ANGLO-AMERICAN TREATY. WASHINGTON, August 16. The Senate's Committee's objection to the Anglo-American treaty is based wholly on the contracting parties' failure to consult the Senate before making the treaty as provided for in the United States Constitution. A minority report will be presented by the other members of the Foreign Affairs' Committee next week. CANADIAN ELECTIONS. OTTAWA, August 16. Sir Yt'ilfrid Laurier, in opening t&e election campaign ridiculed as beneath contempt, the talk of annexation of Canada. If returned to power he would call a meeting of tho House immediately with a view to ratifying the reciprocity treaty. \ ILLNESS OF THE POPE. ROME, August 16. The Pope's condition is unchanged.
