STREET NAMING.

To tlio Editor of the '\Timaru Herald." Sir, —X would like to point out- -a little business transaction that came before the Tiuiaru 'Borough Council in I the form of a petition signed by 02 residents of Cullinaun, Commercial, and Pearson Streets, and jiresented by Councillor' ShiLlito, in regard to naming the above streets. I could hardly believe my own' eyes when 1 read the report of the meeting of the Council this morning. Councillor Sliillito spoke in support of the petition, and urged that the name Commercial Street be given effect to according to the wishes ox these 62 people who signed the petition. Now I would like to point out that the said petition has been signed by people under u wrong impression, for 1 believe they signed tliinking they were only signing to keep for Commercial Street its own name, but did not think it was to dispense with the name of their own street. Again, I would like to ask Councillor Sliillito if all the G2 who signed the petition were ratepayers, or rent-payers, husband or wife, as I believe no one has the right to sign any petition, or have any voice in any public matter, under the age of 21 yenis'. I would like to ask do all these.62 bear this qualification or not, as I am informed that some of them do not possess the right. I would like also to ask Councillor .Sliillito how it is he gave such a strong argument in favour of the petition, when lie himself spoke to me on the matter, and told me that on account of . Mr Cullmann giving _ the land to widen the road, and also a- section for a church, he considered Mr Cullmami had a right to some consideration inasmuch : as no one' in Commercial Street has j : ever given anything. Why this round turn of- Councillor Sliillito? But I believe the earth turns every twenty-four hours, and X suppose Councillor Shillito will tell us lie must go along with it. But to my • mind I consider if any man deserves an consideration it is Mr John Pearson, for I think he lias done more for that locality than any other man I know of, and he lias backed it up by living in the locality himself for the past- 40 odd years. If he is not considered I would suggest a way out of the trouble by calling the street Church Street "West, and then none can be offended.—l am, etc., PATRICK CAIRNS. Cullinaun St., Tiniaru. July 15, 1911. [Councillor Shillito informs us that when he had the conversation with Mr Cairns he was not aware that Mr Pearson had also given land for the street.— Editor "Tiniaru Herald."J To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —In reading your report of Monday's Council meeting, 1 noticed that •Mr J- W\ Holdgate had written sug-i gestrag the re-naming of North Street to 4 'Westward," the reason assigned being that 4 'North Street" was very misleading. Sir, I have lived in Tiniaru some 40 years, and in North Street a good part of- that time, and have nlvva.vs found it a most reliable street. It has never misled me it ia straight, the longest straight street in our town* one of "the best known-streets in the pluee, thoroughly respectable, and would not knowingly mislead anyone. If there are times when some folks cannot liud their w;iy up North Street (and such times raav occur), might X suggest a little water. to the good old name, which is infinitely better than ''Westward,* "Joeward," or any similar appellation.—l am, etc., north street. Timaru, August loth.
