The Council of the Victorian Employers Federation lias adopted a protest [ against Mr Hughes, the Federal Attor- | ney-General, occupying the position of i president of the Waterside Workers' Federation and directing members to refuse to handle non-union sugar, as such action tended to cause a general strike in contempt of the Arbitration Act, which he, as Attorney-General should endeavour to uphold* ' AUSTRALIA'S OUTER BURDEN. Mr Fisher states that while in England he urged that Australia should be made a predominant factor in the Pacific, No definite arrangements had been made, but he gathered the impression. that hia representations wero favourably received. The question of some of the Pacific Islands being taken over by Australia would become pressing in the future., but so far the question has not been considered by the Government. N.S. BYE-ELECTIONS. . SIDNEY, August 16. Both sides are confident of winning to-day 3 bye-elections. The campaign has been conducted with extreme vigour and considerable bitterness and will he a fight to a finish. It is considered probable that the Labour Party will win one if not both seats'.
