THE ARNOLD MURDER CASE.
DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED. Press Aissociatioh-ByTelegraph-Copyright SYDNEY, Juno 19. The .sentence on Ridey for murdering Ro>c Arnold has been commuted to imprisonment for life. Riley, who was tried twice on the charge of murder, killed Rose Arnold on March 29th, 1906, was sentenced, to death in May, and was declared in June to be insane. ' Medical evidence having shown that Riley was suffering from delusional mania and had recently recovered his sanity, lie was placed on trial for the second time, and sentenced to death. Riley went to his lodgings on March 28th, IGC6, accompanied by Rose Arnold. The girl went up to his room, and the occupants of the house shortly afterwards heard several shots. Tho door of the room was locked, but, on looking through the window, the mviier' of the house saw the girl lying on the floor, and Riley looking out into the street calmly smoking a cigarette. Then further, tiring was heard. When the police arrived it was found that the girl had been shot in four places, and her 'been almost severed by a razorcut. Rilev was found- lying by her side with a bullet wound in the face and his throat cut. He afterwards: confessed to the murder. The cause of the tragedy was jealously.
