LICE-INFECTED SHEEP.
A CASE FROM SOUTHLAND. t At the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Mr C. A. ■ Wray, S.M., a case was brought against D. Haugh, a sheep-farmer, of Heriot, Southland, for exposing sheep that were infected witb lice for sale.
Defendant, who was unable to appear, was represented by Mr D. Shea, of the auction department of the Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Association, they having undertaken to sell the sheep. ' Mr Huddlestone, of <the_ Government Stock Department, stated having seen the sheep exposed for sale in the Pleasant Point saleyards on Monday last, and noticed three to be affected very badly with lice. He said the Department did not wish to press for a heavy penalty, but they wished it to 1 be perfectly understood that sheep so affected must not be exposed for sale.
His Worship remarked that it was time that it was understood, -,s a few. cases had come up at different timesj ! Mr Shea said the offence was v admitted by defendant, and he asked his Worship to take into consideration the fact that the • sheep had only arrived In Pleasant Point the day before they were to be sold, and that there had peen no chance to dip them, for they arrived on a Sunday. The sheep had left Southland on the Thursday previous, and came straight through. Dipping ; in Southland was muci later than in this district.
Mr Huddlestone *aid the sheep in thfs case should have been dipped before they left/ Southland,; as lousy sheep -should not be allowed to travel through the country. His Worship concurred, and imposed a fine of £2 and 7s costs.
