THE COURSING CLUB.
To the Editor of the " Timaru Herald."
Sir,—l am very pleased to see that the South Canterbury Coursing Club, which has recently, been formed, is apparently meeting with a considerable amount of support in the attempt to form a Plumpton at Washdybe. Judging from the reports -which you Lave published those interested in the movement deserve the thanks of the district for the manner in which they are acting, and for the success so far achieved. As an honest sport coursing assumes the leading position, for once the hounds are off the leashes, the best animal must win. Although not yet a member I would like to give a word of advice in regard to the erection of the Plumpton. As soon as the' escapes are erected get the hares on the ground. and they will then know where to beat a retreat when let out of the boxes on the day of the meeting. As the hares cost from five to six shillings each, and forty or fifty at least will be required, it will be a financial loss to the club if many are killed while the confidence of the public will be lost in the sport if there is a heavy mortality. Hares well schooled should! beat the hounds nine times out of ten. Should the club aim at this I am sure it wfll be well supported by all lovers-of the pastime. I am, etc., WATERLOO.
