CONTRACT T. DAY LABOUR. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 2T. The Trades Council carried a resolution protesting against the City Council calling for fresh tenders for the wood-paving of streets, and urge that the work be done by day labour. The engineer's estimate was 2s 9d per superficial yard, while the lowest tender was 5s 4d, "and the Trades Council consider that the work can be earned out cheaper and better under the system they suggest. Referring to the Trade and Labour Council's protect against street-blocking being done t>y contract, the Mayor explains that it does not necessarily fellow that the work "will not eventually be carried out by day labour hecvise of the action, but it" must be a matter of considerable satisfaction to the Council as well as to the citizens if. on receipt of fresh tenders, it is clearly expressed that the City Engineer's estimate <having in meantime been earefullv reconsidered) is sufficient for the work, and that contractors are unable to approach the 2;. Tires. In such circumstances the Council could tot possibly take anv other course than to carry out* the work" themselves, whereas it "an outside contractor ttpon review quotes a lower figure than th« estimate of the City Engineer, it will then become a matter for the consideration of the Council whether the apparent saving ■will be sufficient to induce tneni to accept the tender.
