ABOMINABLE FOOTPATHS.

To the Editor of the "Tiniaru Herald." Sir, —May I call the attention of the Bc-rouch Council, through the medium of your paper, to the disgraceful state of the footpaths in Bank street (both sides). After rain they are simply a quagmire, and I am informed that one of the Councillors resides not far from St. Mary's Schoolroom. If such be the case, surely he will corroborate the above. I am, etc., RESIDENT. To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —After last night's rain, the footpath from St. Mary's Church, in Church street, to LeCren street, was this morning in a most disgraceful state. In several places along the footpath, there were pools of water, and in other parts the yellow clay and mud. Residents had to wade through it all to business. Such, a state of things is not creditable to the engineer. From Sir Geaney's butchery and fronting the Masonic Lodge there are about three feet of concrete footpath which, is most dangerous to walk upon, night or day. The concrete is full of crab-holes, and to aroid them you take the ether part of the footpath, which is mud bank. In dry weather those pans are not «o bad. Last winter, at the crossings of streets in Tarious parts of the town, sereral loads -of shingle were spread broadcast. In any well-regulated town, at those crossings a. six-foot track with some tar and sand would enable the public to cross on to the path; besides, in rarious part* of the footpaths you find dangerous holes. There are many other matters of detail which should be attended to.

I am, etc., February 20tli.
