SHOOTING

THE SOUTH CANTERBURY- RIFLE ASSOCIATION. The Rifle meeting was continued yesterday, commencing at 8 a.m., and concluding (except the school boys' match, to commence at 9.30 this moraingi about 5 p.m. The weather was vary fine lor shooting, the rain of the night before haring cleared the air. Most of the day the sua shone fairly evenly, and some Terr good scoring was done. In, the Harbour Board matcii Colour-Sergeant Higgins put up the very fine score of 63 out of a possible 70. It will also be seen from the scores that five possibles were made at the 500 yards range. The conditions were much better for shooting than on the first day, a light easterlv breeze blowing, the windage allowance at 500 yards being sft, and 700 yaids sit. The meeting passed off very well, and great credit is due to those who had chaigi of the arrangements. • The officers' however, were given occasion ft,r complaint at the unreadiness of competitors to "lend a hand" when trilling tatigue duty was required, in changing tangts. The mechanical arrangements did great credit to the chief engineer, Sergeant-Major Bradley, and the meeting, in, the hands of Colonel Jowvey, Captains Gillies and Beckingham, Captain-Adjutant Foden, and SergeantMajor Crespin as secretary, was p'easantlv managed. The markets* and scoiers deserve a word of praise for their care and patience.
