LITERATURE FOR THE BUSY MAN.

One of the most unique literary efforts on record is the "Library of Famous Literature," which has just been edited by Dr Kichard. Garnett. C.8., in association with. M. Leon. Valee, Dr Alois Brandl, and Dr Donald G. Mitchell, and of which 19,000 sets of 20 octavo volumnes each were distributed in England by " The Standar" in a few months.

The project is almost unique of its kind. Though ambitious, it is practical, and for a small outlay anyone can place himself in possession of a selection of the works of the greatest masters of literature, accompanied by critical essays by men who are accorded without question the right to hold the first place in departments of letters with which tEey deal. Dr Garnett is perhaps the one man living sufficiently qualified to undertake this task. He has just retired from the position of Keeper of the Printed Books at the British Museum, after • spending nearly fifty years within its walls. During this time, his advice and assistance have been given to almost every man of letters who has made use of the great national storehouse of books; probably there is no man living whose services have been thankfully acknowledged in so many prefaces to books. His immediate assistants are no less capable. . * ■
