In Colonel Ricardo's case,Captoin Dodds ' in. his evidence said that at Vet River Colonel Ricardo remained under cover while a detachment of Queenslanderg under Captain Reid and New Zealanders captured a Maxim. When urged by a brother officer to advance, Ricardo said the New Zealanders could lose their men if they liked, but he was going to take his back-to Queensland. Three members of the Contingent gave evidence of seeing Ricardo get stuck in a fence, while the - detachment was taking c«ver from the enemy's 'fire. Ricardo sliouted to be taken out, or he would be shot.' Received'lo.3o p.m., August 20th. KANAKA IMMIGRATION. The Premier, referring to the rumour that it was proposed to stop Kanaka immigration after five years, stated that such a term was of very little use; if Mr Barton made it ten years this State would let . him alone. Received :9.29 a.m., August 20th. BLOOD STOCK FOR NEW; ZEALAND. MELBOURNE, August 20. The thoroughbred stallion Finland lias been purchased for New Zealand owners. SALVAGE. The steamer Taglaaferrc| has been awari ded £2500 as salvage for towing the disabled steamer Alola to port in April last. ADVANCES TO SETTLERS. The public subscribed a little over £20,000 of the £IOO,OOO 3, per cent. Government guaranteed debentures on account of the Commissioners of the Savings Bank, which is to be used for advances to farmers. The balance was allotted by the Commissioners at a minimum of £96.
