Spencer Gollan, Tom Sullivan (ex-New Zealander), and George Towns (ex-Aus-tralian), scullers, rowed from Oxford to
Putney, 104 miles, in 13 horn's 56 minutes, establishing a long distance record. The journey was made in a 35 feet treble sculler, recently built for Gollan with a view of breaking the Thames records. Received 10.30 a.m., April 24th. STEEL AND IRON WORKS. British capitalists are spending £lO,000,000 to establish steel and iron works at Sault Sainte Marie, in Canada, to employ 10,000 hands. CONTEMPT OF COURT. The offence of Mr McHugh, member for North Leitrim, was publishing the names of the Protestant jurymen in connection with the conviction of land-leaguers on charges of conspiracy and intimidation. LIBERAL DONATIONS. Mr Andrew Carnegie gives £45,000 to endow libraries at Vancouver, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Windsor, and Ontario. ALLEGED FRAUDULENT BANKRUPTCY. Monsigmor Guerin, odl Chateaureux, in France, has been arrested for swindling by means of a fraudulent bankruptcy. His defalcations amount to £150,000. The victims are chiefly Catholics. Received 12.55 a.m., April 25th. THE SOMALI RISING. The rising of Ogadin Somalis in Jubaland, East Africa, has been crushed, and British authority restored. THEFT OF PICTURES. PARIS, April 23. Several of M. Detaillx', the famous French artist's pictures, including liis masterpiece, " The March Past," have been stolen from his mother's residence near Paris.
