TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMARU HERALD. Sir,—Mr Turner's letter m your issue of the 7th instant calls for a few words of explanation. When speaking at the last meeting of the Levels County Council { said typhoid was very prevalent m limaru, and that some cases had come from Wellington street. Mr Turner must indeed be very ignorant if he is not aware that there is a person now slowly recovering from typhoid within fifty yards of his front door. There iB
another assertion that I would like Mr Turner to explain. He says "Mr Macintosh's statement that the channel is still m a bad and dangerous state would not be worth noticing, &c." Did not Mr i Turner along with others sign a letter to the Levelß County Council, complaining of the filthy condition of these side channels, and requesting the Council to see to the same ? To read Mr Turner's letter one would think that the condition of the side channels could not be improved upon. If such >s the case why did he sign the requisition ? The suburban area cannot expect anything but trouble about their drainage until they either form a Drainage Board for themselves or join the borough. Four out of every five cases of typhoid are to be found m the suburbs. If ".Guardian of Health" would assist those who are endeavouring to bring about reforms he would do some good. As it is, his rash and untruthful statements do much to damage the reputation of the place all over New Zealand. I am, etc., C. N. Macintosh.
