» . (By Telegraph.) WELLINGTON, September 10. Mr H. A. Field, of Waikanae, has been asked and has agreed to stand for Otaku Several changes m the officers of the New Zealaland Shipping Company's steamers have taken place recently,, Captain Taggard, late of the Otarama, takes command of the new steamer Wairaate. Captain Harnon, late of the ship Turakina, has been appointed chief officer of the same steamer. Captain Sutcliffe, late of the Aorangi, assumes command of the Rakaia ; Captain Banks and the first, second, and third officers of the latter steamer having been changed. Mr Clifford, chief officer of the Tongariro, takes command of the Otarama, It is understood that the New -Zealand Shipping Company are having another new Bteamer built, of similar design to the Wriimate. The colonial mails, which left Auckland by the Alamada on August Bth, arrived m London yesterday, due date. NELSON, September 10 The jubilee of the Loyal Howard Lodge of Oddfellows was celebrated to-night by a social and ball ;which is attended by about six hundred persons, including members of the order and ladies. The guests were welcomed by two of the officers and the proceedings are of a brilliant nature. , CHRISTGHUROH, September 10. The Rev. E. R. Otway, curate at Lincoln, died somewhat suddenly yesterday morning. His health had been bad for some time? bufc-he seetoetlbetter after his* recent trip to England. His ;death was unexpected. The foundation stone of the new ward at the hospital, the cost of which was bequeathed by the late Mr Hyman Marks, was laid this afternoon. The total cost will be about £8000. DUNEDIN, September 10. Walter Clark, aged 42, single, a rabbit* 1 !", was drowned m the Taieri river at Hyde yesterday. The body has not been recovered. It is understood that the Forbury Park Company has for some time been trying to make terms vrith the Dunedin Jockey Club to continue at the Forbury, but these appear to be at an end, as the Dunedin Jockey Club Committee tonight decided to. at once call for tenders for works at the new course at Wingatui. At a prohibition demonstration tonight a resolution was- passed urging the passing of the Alcoholic Liquors Bill with amendments this session. Mr G. J. Clark is a candidate for the Chalmers electorate, and cotiimences his campaign at once.
