A sensible American has taught his dog, a water spaniel, to extinguish fire whenever it sees anything burning. To test the little dog, a piece of paper was ignited and dropped on the floor. In an instant the dog jumped upon it, and very quickly extinguished it by rubbing it with its paws. The dog was tried with a lighted cigar, and with the same result. You can't keep a dead level long, says O. W. Holmes, if you burn everything down flat to make it. Why, bless your soul, if all the cities of the world were reduced to ashes you'd have a new set of millionaires in a couple of years or so, out of the trade in potash.
