Prior Vaughan, who is on a visit to Syduey in connection with his mission for improving the condition of the masses, in the course of an interview, referring to the proposed union of the Roman and Anglican Churches, said it was undoubtedly the sincere desire of a large number of Anglicans to reunite with Rome, who, like a tender mother, invites her children to return ; but it was a mistake to think for a moment that she was going to abandon her timehonoured throne, and shake hands all round with every sect and denomination. THE TAIERI. Arrived — Taieri. A DISHONEST OFFICER. Ernest Henry Flewellyn, late paymaster of the naval forces, was sentenced to three years for larceny. His defalcations totalled between £2000 and £3000. THE TICHBORNE CLAIMANT. Jean Luie has sworn an affidavit containing an amplification of the confession made in December, in which he declares emphatically, that the inmate of Paramatta Asylum is Tichborne. He also states that Orton told him he was a mate of Tichborne for years in Australia, and that from him he obtained the history of the Tichborne family. THE ROTOKINO. Arrived— Rotokino, from the Bluff. A MILL DESTROYED BY FIRE. East and May's mill, Tamora, in which a very large stock of flour was stored in anticipation of a rise, has been completely destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at between £4000 and £5000. The property was owned by the Joint Stock Bank on which the National Insurance Company of New Zealand have a line of £1700. OBITUARY. Melbourne. June 1. The death is announced of Dr Dobson, M.L.C., brother of the Chief Justice of Tasmania. THE TARIFF QUESTION. A manifesto has been issued by the Protection Association and representatives of industries affected, protesting against many of the recommendations of the Tariff Commission. It was also decided to schedule the recommendations and objections, and these will be forwarded to all members of the Legislative Assembly as the tariff of each trade comes before Parliament.
